About
Welcome to The Wesley Foundation at Arkansas State University!
Wesley Foundations are university and/or college campus initiatives of the United Methodist Church. Wesley Foundations claim ancestry to an early 18th c. Anglican "Holy Club" movement made up of a group of students at Oxford University, influenced by John and Charles Wesley. They assembled together to practice an intentional and "methodical" (hence "Methodist") faith pursuit of study, prayer, and self-discipline striving to align with the vision and values of Jesus Christ.
The first official Wesley Foundation was established October 13, 1913 at the University of Illinois. Bishop James C. Baker's influence in organizing this first Wesley Foundation chose the name to emphasize two spheres of outreach. Wesley refers to John Wesley the founder of the Methodist church movement and first campus minister at Oxford University, while Foundation was selected to mean an "open movement," an ecumenical movement available to all college students.
The Wesley Foundation at Arkansas State University began as an initiative off campus in a building on Caraway Rd. Eventually, a building was erected on the A-State campus in December of 1958 at 112 Dean St. Later, in the 90's, another neighboring building was purchased at 110 Dean St., the former site for the Church of Christ campus ministry. In June of 2023, both buildings were sold to A-State. The Wesley Foundation is currently using A-State spaces, church facilities, and other local venues to gather and continue their mission.
Consistent with its roots, The Wesley Foundation at A-State is more than just a ministry of the United Methodist Church. Even though we are particularly connected to, and mostly supported by the Arkansas Conference, we still invite, include, and support students of other Christian faith backgrounds (or none at all). Though we are actively pursuing and practicing a Jesus-centered way of life, we value the dialogue and journey of each person, and hope to provide a safe space for anyone to explore spirituality centered around Jesus without expecting you to embrace it (admittedly though, we will be hoping you do just so we can share that in common with you).
Whatever your reasons are for coming to Arkansas State and wherever you plan to go when you leave, we hope you will find college community with The Wesley at A-State!
Blessings,
The Wesley at A-State
